We have teamed up with GB Privilege who are experienced
Motorhome tour operators to offer first time hirers the chance of touring
Normandy in France with a tour guide and in company with other first timers
at a very competitive price:
The Agenda:
NORMANDY INVASION BY
BRITISH RENTAL
MOTORHOMES
Say the word
Normandy and images of
battle invariably come to mind. Long ships bristling with oars scudding into
the darkness toward Hastings - as immortalized in the Bayeux Tapestry, which
traces the epic tale of William the Conqueror, who in 1066 sailed across the
Channel to claim his right to England's throne. Or the iron grey battleships
amassing silently along the shore at dawn, lowering tailgates to pour young
Allied infantry into German machine-gun fire. At Omaha Beach you may marvel
at the odds against the soldiers who, in June 1944, were able to take the
cliff and pave the way for the Allies to reclaim Europe.
From the
Norman conquest to D-Day - this region in northwestern France resonates with
history, a history inextricably woven with that of its neighbour across the
Channel. And, just as in the British Isles, no matter how you concentrate on
history and culture, sooner or later you'll be beguiled by the countryside,
by Normandy's rolling green landscape peppered with dairy cows and
half-timbered farmhouses, and by the spray of sea breezes off the Channel.
Saturday September 26th
2009: We meet up today at a campsite in Kent
in readiness for a ferry in the morning. This evening everyone can get to
know each other at an informal drinks reception.
Sunday September 27th
2009: We catch a ferry from Dover this morning
and arrive at Calais. After disembarking we have a drive of about 80 miles
to our first campsite near Abbeville.
Monday September 28th
2009: Today’s drive is about 120 miles, but as
it is virtually all on motorway it will not be very strenuous. This
afternoon it may be possible to stop off in the lovely harbour town of
Honfleur to feel the atmosphere and experience the exceptional light which
has entranced artists for centuries. In the late afternoon we will arrive at
our campsite just to the north of Caen, located between what were named
Sword and Juno beaches in 1944. If you want to give the cook a break it
would be easy to stroll into town and have dinner in a seafront restaurant.
Tuesday September 29th
2009: We will be collected this morning by a
coach with an English speaking guide and taken to Bayeux for a look at the
world famous tapestry which depicts the Battle of Hastings in 1066. This
will be followed by a visit to the superb war museum. We will then have the
opportunity to get our own lunch in the town. This afternoon we will be
taken to see several of the Normandy beaches, including the notorious Pointe
du Hoc on Omaha Beach and the remains of the Mulberry harbour at
Arromanches, as well as Pegasus Bridge, where you will able to stand on the
spot where 3 gliders were landed, in what has been described at one of the
most amazing feats of flying/navigation ever! At the end of a very
interesting day we will be returned to our Motorhomes for a relaxing
evening.
Wednesday September 30th
2009: A completely free day to recover from
yesterday. In the evening we will again be collected by a coach and this
time we will be taken to a Calvados distillery. Most of you will know that
Normandy is famous for cheese, cream and cider, and Calvados is a spirit
made with distilled cider. It could be described as apples with a kick!
After learning about the production of Calvados we will have a traditional
Norman feast in the distillery, washed down with cider. Normandy cider is
lighter than British, it is more like sparkling apple wine – and absolutely
delicious. Our coach will return us to our Motorhomes at the end of the
evening.
Thursday October 1st 2009: This
morning we head back to Calais and go to the Franglais drinks outlet
on the outskirts of Calais, where we will park up for the night. Franglais
closes to the public at 19.30 and at 19.45 we will stroll into the wine &
drinks store for a meal-sized buffet with free wine tasting. Beer will also
be available to drink at French prices. During the evening you can stroll
around the shop and buy whatever you want from the huge selection at low,
French prices. All major credit cards are accepted. Your purchases can be
stored overnight for collection in the morning. No facilities are available,
so you will need to use your motorhome’s toilet and shower etc.
Friday October 2nd
2009: We are only about 5 miles from the port
so there will be enough time for some shopping before catching a lunchtime
ferry back to Dover. Don’t forget to fill up with cheap diesel before
leaving. After arrival in Dover you can drive as far as you need, ready to
return your rental Motorhome within your contracted duration.
Saturday October 3rd
2009: Return the Motorhome to the rental
company and take your shopping home – along with your memories!
The Tour is limited to only 25 Motorhomes and is offered
on a first come, first served basis.
